RSP successfully completed the refurbishment of M9 locomotives for Sri Lanka Railways, delivering significant improvements in efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Project Scope & Objectives
The M9 locomotives, originally imported from General Motors (GM), had been in operation for several decades, requiring a major overhaul to extend their service life. RSP undertook a complete refurbishment focusing on:
Traction System Upgrade – Implementing a modernized traction and control system for better power management.
Engine Overhaul & Optimization – Restoring engine components to enhance fuel efficiency and performance.
Safety & Electrical System Enhancements – Upgrading braking, electrical, and control systems to meet modern safety standards.
Structural Refurbishment – Strengthening the locomotive body and improving durability for extended use.
Impact & Benefits
- Operational Efficiency: The upgraded locomotives now offer smoother performance, increased reliability, and improved power utilization.
- Cost Savings: The refurbishment resulted in an estimated LKR 2.28 billion in savings, reducing the need for costly new locomotive imports.
- Sustainability: The project supports eco-friendly operations by reducing fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with modern railway sustainability goals.
- Extended Service Life: The locomotives can now continue operating efficiently for years to come, supporting national railway infrastructure.
This project reinforces RSP’s expertise in locomotive modernization and maintenance, ensuring sustainable and high-performance railway operations.
